General Loxoc

General Loxoc

On the day that Johno was to leave Somnos and venture into the "outside world," he and Gilliad went out for tea at a fancy cafĂ© and then went to see a fortuneteller. Fortunetellers are very common in Somnos and it is tradition that, before leaving Dormia for good, all Wanderers go to have their fortune told. Johno and Gilliad went together. The fortuneteller, an old woman with no teeth who wore a flamboyant red wig, read Johno's fortune but refused to tell him what she saw. She muttered indecipherably and walked away. Years later, on a day when he was missing his brother, Gilliad went back to the fortune teller and asked her what she had seen. The woman refused to talk. Gilliad became angry and eventually the old woman uttered these words: “You and your brother will both be killed by the same sword.”
